Day 2 - Orisson to Roncesvalles

Our luck ran out. It drizzled almost the entire way from Orisson to Roncesvalles. Could not see the sunset last night nor the sunrise this morning. Such a missed opportunity.  There will be lots of sunrises along the way but we will not be viewing them from up high in the mountain.

After a quick breakfast, we were on our way. Drizzle and misty so not a lot of pictures. But they can be different so all is not lost.

We went up to elevation 1429 m and then back down to 953 m to Roncesvalles. That is up 600 m and then back down about 500 m. Sounds daunting but was actually an easier walk than the first day because of the milder gradient. It was miserable, cold and wet but we made good time. We were among the first 50 or so to arrive. Plenty of time to relax and explore.  This time, we also chose the flatter route down the last 3.6 km to Roncesvalles. No injury so it is all good.

The albergue in Roncesvalles is huge so there is little chance of not getting beds if we arrive at reasonable time which we certainly did. A Korean at last night's dinner said that Roncesvalles was full for the last couple of days. We were surprised. When pressed, he said some of his friend or fellow Korean arrived at 7pm. I don't think that is considered reasonable time

We bought pilgrim dinner and breakfast offered by the albergue to be served at a nearby restaurant. They do have a kitchen here but no food supplies other than packaged food. The dinner at la Posada is not different from three years ago. Reasonable food at the pilgrim price of 10€ per person.

Roncesvalles is very small but it does have a couple of interesting places to visit. However,  it was very cold and we quickly escaped after dinner back to our small unit of 4 bunk beds.

Tomorrow should be better with chance of shower in the morning but perhaps a bit of sunshine in the afternoon. Hoping for the best.
