Day 34 - Melide to Salceda
Drizzle then sunny
The miserable weather at the end of yesterday carried into this morning. We have been so lucky with the weather throughout the Camino, we can't complain. There was no extreme coldness and there had been only a couple of hot mornings. Hot sun in the afternoon doesn't bother us because we would have been done by then and we can hide. A few showers, that is it; until the continuous drizzle over the last two days. We are hoping for a good weather finish but looks like we are out of luck. The weather forecast says showers in Santiago de Compostela on Wednesday.
Today we went for 25 km. The distance is not too bad but the rolling hills plus the wetness made it quite a bit tougher. Gigi's knee doesn't really like downhill walking. Today's target albergue is a private one with 30 beds. Having been rejected once before, we wanted to arrive early to make sure we have a bed, thinking that others may have made reservations. Turned out that the albergue opens at 2 pm and we got our beds without any problem.
Today we have a private room. They have rooms with 3 or 4 beds, maybe a room with still more beds. The hospitalero is kind enough to give us a three-bed room, price is still at 10€ a bed, that is good for us. There is a kitchen with a microwave but nowhere to buy foods again. Showers are in an external building, kind of weird, but the showers with massaging jets made up for it. People are taking long showers while others are grumbling. Also a first is that the hospitalero carried our bags upstairs and insisted that we settled in, had the showers, before doing all the paperwork. A bit eccentric but we thought it is also quite effective because he can entertain all his guests before spending time on the paperwork. I do mean entertain because he gave a grand tour of the albergue to everyone, including showing off his water heater.
Didn't take too many pictures today. Too wet. Did see the tent with the donkey nearby again today. We thought we saw the guy with the tent walked by the other day, without the donkey in tow. Now I am not sure whether that really is his donkey.
The restaurant across the road was closed on Mondays so we are forced to go back to the bar next door and we thought we are going to have sandwiches for dinner. Surprisingly, even they don't have a menu, they offer very decent pilgrim's dinner and we had a good meal tonight.
