Day 24 - San Martin del Camino to Astorga

Day 24 - San Martin del Camino to Astorga

Overcast, sunny

We have completed 24 of our revised 36-day schedule. Two-third done. We like to see it as a milestone. Three-quarters, four-fifths and so on. We will count them all. We will be doing the last mountain stage in a few days. After that, we will really be on the home stretch.

Between the albergue, the bar and the shop that over-charged us, we cannot get out of San Martin del Camino fast enough this morning. We did not have breakfast at Bar Los Picos with Gina. We will pray for her in Santiago (she asked), if we remember. Doesn't mean the whole town is bad. Next time we will try Albergue Viera, with a swimming pool.

Today we opted for the slightly longer trail route rather than following the highway. We've had enough highway over the last few days. It looks like, though, it is a new path being constructed and dust flies everywhere when a car or a truck passed. Not too interesting either. But at least we don't have to walk along with trucks that fly by at 100 km/hr.

Our albergue is at the entrance of town but the lead-in is long. It took more than an hour after we first saw the double towns from the top of the hill. Needless to say, it is the second one we want. Everyone gasps when they saw the pathway over the train track that needs several winding to get over (see picture below).

The albergue is nice, thank goodness, with kitchen, terrace, etc. Found a supermarket on our short walk through the plazas. Back to cooking today.

  1. Nothing makes me happier than seeing the three of you guys smiling sitting on the terrace having dinner! What, no more wine with meals? I can't wait to come with you some day
