Day 22 - Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon

Day 22 - Mansilla de las Mulas to Leon

Sunny

Are we there yet? Going into a remote town, we would go over a hill and see houses in the distance. It may take 45 minutes but the target is set. Going into the big cities, we would have arrived into town but have no idea how much longer we still have to walk through the city to get to our albergue. We would be at what Brierley's guidebook referred to as the 'end of day pace' and it just seems forever.

We started reasonably early today although it is going to be a short day. We just have a feeling that the albergue we picked may be a popular one. We arrived just before they opened and it still took a fair bit of time for the hospitalera to figure out where to put the three of us. Apparently there were a lot of booking in advance.

The walk today again was not interesting; mostly walking along the highway linking the two cities. The walk into the city was actually not as bad as the guidebook says. Perhaps we were expecting the worst but it wasn't worse than Burgos.

Gigi again is experiencing tightness on the outside of her knee (her LCL I think). Dustin:  you can jump in anytime if you can help with stretching exercises, massaging techniques and such. Consider this the first repayment of all the schooling you are getting. The tightness works itself out after a while but it sure was slow going at first.

We learned our lesson about all the shops closing at 2 pm and went straight to grocery shopping after registering for the albergue. It turns out that there is open market in Plaza Major two days a week in Leon and today is one of them. We got produce, cheese and smoked meat there and went to the supermarket for the rest of the stuff. We are set for one more day plus tomorrow's breakfast and lunch.

After lunch and refreshed ourselves, we went to visit Leon. The open market has been completely cleared out by then. One street over, the Catedral of Santa Maria is magnificent. The streets in the old town are lined with coffee shops and all kinds of shops selling foodstuff. Stepping out of the old town, we are met with a modern cookie cutter city that are all the same everywhere.
