Day 25 - Astorga to Foncebadon

Day 25 - Astorga to Foncebadon

Partly cloudy

Gigi seems to have recovered from her discomfort and Winnie has regained her form after a bit of struggle yesterday. Both have been far in front today. I was following along all day until the last climb into Foncebadon. Among the three of us, there is no one obviously slower and we take turns going in front. We don't understand why someday we can walk better than the others for seemingly no reason. I blamed today on my sleep but then I was doing well at the end. Weird!

It was a bad night's sleep for me last night. The room was like an oven. Apparently, most in the room were not affected by it as they were snoring away.

It was surprisingly quick to get out of Astorga. I thought it was bigger. From then on it is constantly uphill with a particularly hard climb near the end. We extended today's distance so we can get to a place with more choices for albergues. We did well with the distance but unfortunately we have taken a few minutes too long and our targeted albergue had only two beds left when we tried to register. There were lots of  beds being reserved for all of the albergues here. Our next target would be up the hill further and we did not want to walk that far to find out whether they have beds. We settled with one that has mixed reviews. The mixed reviews were justified. This albergue also suffers from neglect. The backyard is like a junkyard. One bathroom and one shower for 18 beds!? Well, as before, one night and out we go. Even the town suffers from neglect. Other than the albergues and the restaurants, the are many ruins (not historical) and even the cross town main road  is like rocky path like a trail route on the Camino.

No kitchen here. No good supply for ingredients anyway. We opted to go find our own pilgrim dinner rather than the albergue's community dinner.
