Day 17 - Castrojeriz to Fromista

Day 17 - Castrojeriz to Fromista

Overcast then mostly sunny

We made it. We did 24 km today and arrived around 1 pm. The albergue is supposed to open at 130 pm but the hospitalero let us in early. If we can do 24 to 25 km a couple more times, we could get to Leon without losing a day and that would make life easier in the later stages.

We started really early in Castrojeriz because of the anticipated long day. Had breakfast and already out the door a little after six. The hospitalero was already there managing the breakfast and the early risers so we don't wake the others. The night before, he was still there at 8 pm. What dedication!

A hill not far from Castrojeriz was not  too daunting because of fresh legs and cool weather. Then it was all flat terrain after. The sun came out only as we approached Fromista.

The feet are doing much better these last two days but I think a new pair of insole is in order.

We met up with Rene, the Canadian gentleman from Gatineau again today. We first met him in Orisson, Day One. We saw him on and off until a day before Burgos. He stopped in Burgos for sight seeing and is planning similar stop in Leon. We figured we might run into each other again at the very end.

We also saw the Dutch girl again yesterday. She was in the upper bunk with us in Estella but was taking a rest day because of bad knees. She also caught up. That tells you we are not going very fast. Fortunately it is not a race. We might take a couple more days than planned to get to Santiago de Compostela and may bus to Finisterre instead of walking but we will get there.

Still having energy to go visit the city after settling in. The most annoying is the churches charging admission to get in.
