Day 10 - Navarrete to Azofra
Sunny
After the first few days with rain, we can finally remove the rain covers for our bags and display our Canadian flags. Surprisingly, we did not find many pilgrims showing their colours on their bags. We have seen a couple of Brazilian flags, a Portuguese flag, two small French flags on a bag and another Canadian from Quebec with a tag. That is it. Maybe pilgrimage is a personal journey that transcends nationalities. Nevertheless, we are proud to show that we are from Canada.
Today we changed our original plan to walk to Najera and extended to Azofra for a total of 23 km. And we did it in 6 1/2 hours. By adding a little distance today, we are trying cut down on the 27 km day a few days down the road.
The walk today was relatively uneventful. I think we are in the zone. After getting into Najera, we made our own sandwiches for lunch. Another economical day. Getting back on track, we had an older gentleman trying to lead us out of town. We had to fill up our water bottles and thought that he was gone. And then we found him waiting at the end of the town. Not too far but still. Interesting!
Again we arrived at Azofra in good time. Good thing we finished early because today turned out to be a scorcher. The only good thing is that it is dry heat.
The arrangement of the albergue is a little different. The beds are partitioned into double occupancy. I am the odd man out and have to share the room with a young French guy.
Went to explore the town. There is not much but we did visit the pharmacy, the restaurants and the supermarkets (more like variety stores). Contemplated cooking ourselves but there is not enough in the stores for it to make sense. Pilgrim menu on the main street with another bottle of wine. The red face is the proof.
