Day 14 - Atapuerca to Burgos
Cloudy
Today feels like a long day although we did only about 20 km. There are a few route options that we can choose from. We were planning to do the main route and my Google map track shows it being the main route. It turned out to be the least desirable route along the highway through industrial areas with repair shops, car dealers, furniture stores, etc. More than an hour of the same ceramic tiles pavement. Boring!
The industrial area leads straight into Burgos. The good thing is that we passed through all the places we needed in the big city; like taking cash from the ATM; and more importantly, get our medical supplies. We should have gotten some foods too but didn't want to carry the extra weight.
My foot has gotten worse after another day of pounding. Gigi is trying out her medical skill and we will see how it goes tomorrow.
Burgos is a big city but the municipal albergue is at the end of the city. It is the old town with the magnificent Catedral de Santa Maria. The biggest church we have seen so far, also next to Plaza Major like almost all Spanish towns.
The albergue is a modern facility with very nice arrangement of sleeping quarters, showers and electrical outlet beside every bed. It is therefore very surprising that they don't have WiFi. The City of Burgos has city-wide WiFi but the registration requires too much information for just one day. Instead we went across to the bar to have a snack and use their free WiFi. The albergue also has very disappointing kitchen facilities for such a big building. The microwave oven is the only cooking method available. Instead of microwave dinner, we had pilgrim menu tonight in one of the many restaurants around Plaza Major.
